Determination of allergens in cosmetics

 

It is very important to know the effect of allergens that may be present in our environment, or in the products we consume or use. By the end of this decade allergy may concern 60 % of the population. The modern cosmetics industry is one of the main fields of chemical industry. From 1st may 2004 the European Union (EU Directive 76/768/EEC Annex VIII (a)) regulates the application of 26 most frequent fragrances. The name of the components above a specific concentration must be indicated on the containers of the products. For products which remain on the body this concentration is 0,001%, for those that are washed off the skin during application it is 0,01%.

The analysis of these mixtures is very difficult due to wide range of the possible compounds and sometimes the very low concentration. For the fast, effective, sensitive and flexible testing of the compounds listed in the regulations a package of new methods had to be developed.
We applied the latest sample preparation, detection and data evaluation methods. As a result of this development we have a methodology ready to use for the testing of the products in this particular field.

To demonstrate the applicability of the new methods we tested 80 commercially available cosmetics. Even though in 50 cases we found components with concentration above the limit, these components were not listed on the packaging. All together we detected concentration override in 59 cases but in 19 of these the components were listed according to the regulation.
